Research interests
Maria Mencía is an Associate Professor at Kingston University and an internationally recognised media artist and researcher specialising in digital poetics, electronic literature, and multimodal digital textualities. Her pioneering PhD (2000–2003) was among the first practice‑based doctorates in electronic poetry, positioning her as a leading figure in the evolution of digital literary forms. Her work explores the intersections of language, art, and digital technology, creating innovative interactions between text, sound, image, and code. Mencía’s artworks feature in major collections such as ELC1 and ELC4, and her installations and digital pieces have been exhibited and published worldwide. She also served on the Electronic Literature Organisation (ELO) Board of Directors, and she is one of the series editors of Bloomsbury Electronic Literature, edited in partnership with the Electronic Literature Organisation.
She is the co-director of the research group Sound/Image/Media/ Encounters (SIME) and leads the BA Media and Communication programme at Kingston School of Art. She has been awarded research grants such as the AHRC and FMSH/Mellon Transatlantic Program in Collaborative Digital Humanities, and research fellowships to conduct research at international institutions.
Her publication # WomenTechLit was awarded the N. Katherine Hayles Award for Criticism of Electronic Literature, 2nd prize and her digital artwork The Winnipeg: The Poem that Crossed the Atlantic, was the recipient of the Robert Coover Award for a Work of Electronic Literature, 2nd prize.
