I am an early career researcher examining elements of realism and liberalism in Anglo-Japanese relations between 1902-42.

My research aims to broaden the analysis of Anglo-Japanese relations, as identified by Ian Nish, of being catagorised as the period of the Alliance (1902-23) and Estrangement (1923-41). Instead, my research analyses the period of the Alliance as 1902-18, whilst dividng the period of Estrangement into two seperate studies; 1919-33, whilst Japan was a member of the League of Nations, and 1933-42, examining Japan's departure from the League until the fall of Singapore in February 1942. 

Areas of Expertise:

My area of expertise for the period of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance includes the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, the Russo-Japanse War (1904-05), the Japan-Britain Exhibition of 1910, the First World War in the Far East, the Singapore Mutiny and the Siberian Intervention. 

For the period in which Japan is a member of the League of Nations, my expertise focuses upon Japan and the Mandate System, the Shantung Question and the surrender of Weiheiwei, the League in China, The Mukden Incident and the Manchurian Crisis, the Battle of Shanghai and the Lytton Investigation. 

For the Period after Japan has left the League, my expertise focuses upon Britain's investment in Imperial Defence at Singapore, Countermeasures to Japanese espionage, the Sino-Japanese War (1937 onwards), the Second Battle of Shanghai, the Tientsin Incident, the prelude to the Pacific War, the invasion of Siam, Malaya and Hong Kong and the Fall of Singapore
