Research interests

Tom Coward is a co-founding Director of Agents of Change, designing generous architecture that is beautiful and socially engaged. AOC is a RIBA chartered and award-winning practice; gaining recognition for inventive inquiry, participatory practice and characterful buildings; we operate at diverse scales with a reputation for high-quality architecture in sensitive contexts. Recent work includes refurbishment of the National Archives in Kew, Transforming Lloyd’s Register Foundation, the east London campus for the Royal Academy of Music, a new locomotion exhibition hall for the National Railway Museum and the major re-opening of the Museum of Childhood as the Young V&A.

Tom studied at the University of Nottingham, and the Royal College of Art, where he was awarded the Alsop Architecture Prize. Tom has taught at a number of architecture schools including Kingston, Westminster, London Metropolitan, the Architectural Association, The Welsh School of Architecture and Nottingham University. In 2011 he was a Louis Kahn Visiting Professor at Yale. He is an External Examiner at Edinburgh University.

Currently Senior Lecturer at Kingston School of Art and Director of Studies for PhD. He holds a doctorate through Practice in Design Research. Tom is an External Examiner at Edinburgh University.

Tom’s research as a hybrid practitioner is focused on conversations through practice; drawing and making. Asking what might become democratic design practice and seeking architectural methodologies that connect to a collective imagination.
