A cognitive model in a blackboard architecture: synergism of AI and psychology

Abstract

This paper describes a cognitive simulation model (COSIMO) of a human operator controlling a complex environment. Different cognitive activities as well as metaknowledge mechanisms of the operator are modelled. The model is related to psychological theories of cognition and is implemented in an Artificial Intelligence (AI) problem solving paradigm: the Blackboard (BB) architecture. 

A number of modules, such as a cognitive filter, a diagnoser, a planner, etc., even if independently designed, cooperate dynamically through the BB in accordance with the rules of the metaknowledge mechanisms, which govern the Controller of the BB. The modularity of the BB approach and the flexibility of the control mechanism, facilitate the design of new cognitive modules as well as new control strategies in order to cope with more complex issues, such as temporal reasoning, learning, etc.
