    Abstract

This book is a set of reflections and annotations on A CUT A SCRATCH A SCORE: A Comic Opera in Three Parts - a performance and exhibition project by preeminent British sculptor, Bruce McLean. McLean worked in collaboration on this project with fellow artists David Barnett and Sam Belinfante at Cooper Gallery, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee (October 2011 - March 2012) which was curated by Sophia Yadong Hao. This publication appropriates Alain Badiou's philosophy of the 'event' as a curatorial proposition that situates exhibition making as a focal point for the unanticipated, the ephemeral and contingent production of knowledge. Evolving from material generated throughout the project, including artists' sketches, working notes, transcripts of Salons, librettos, and reflexive texts by three writers in residence during the project. This book is also an extended paratext with commissioned essays by leading philosophers and writers including Levi R. Bryant, Lisa Le Feuvre, Robin McKay and Christopher Townsend.

    Bibliographical note

Impact: The book contains newly-commissioned essays by Lisa LeFeuvre (then-Head of Sculpture Studies, Henry Moore Institute); Prof. Levi R. Bryant (Philosophy, Collins College); Robin McKay (philosopher, publisher); and Prof. Christopher Townsend (Royal Holloway, University of London), plus original text-based works by Ajay Hothi, Christina Manning-Lebek, and John Dummett.

The book was the final stage of a three-part research project: Stage one, a week-long live art commission at the Cooper Gallery, and various public spaces in Dundee City Centre, with internationally-renowned artist Bruce McLean, Sam Belinfante and David Barnett, supported by students from the MFA Fine Art, DJCAD, and community music groups: Dundee Choral Union and Dundee Drum Academy. As writer-in-residence, I gathered research material for this book by leading daily public workshops, salons, and roundtable discussions between members of the public and all participants of the performance.

Stage two took place at the Hockney Gallery, Royal College of Art, in collaboration with MA Writing, where I organised a week-long performance examining site writing and public lectures with participants including Bruce McLean, Prof. Brian Dillon, Jane Rendell and Sally O'Reilly.

I personally received a £3k grant from Arts Council England for production of this book, which was also co-funded by Creative Scotland (both mandated measurable reporting), as a form of cross-national creative collaboration. With this, I was able to commission new work by seventeen artists and academics to create new research on curating and performance art through the galleries and higher education sectors.
