Abstract

Light field imaging and display technologies enable immersive visualization experiences with smooth parallax without the need for glasses or specific head-mounted devices. However, a large amount of data is required to support such extreme realism, hence compression becomes necessary, in particular when data transmission is required, e.g., for telepresence applications. Due to the specific features of such visualization experience, subjective quality tests are necessary to assess the quality of compressed light fields. This paper presents the results of subjective tests performed displaying light field content compressed via HEVC on an 8K light field display. We decided here to use a double stimulus approach where the pairs are composed of stimuli with neighbor compression ratios. We will make per-subject scores publicly available upon publication of this paper and we expect our results will support the development of more realistic objective quality metrics for light field content visualization. As a consequence this will also enable the development of compression methods better tailored to users’ experience.
