    Abstract

Artwork commissioned by Curator Andrew Bracey for touring exhibition 'Enough is Definitely Enough' 2019 - 2020 (General Practice Lincoln, Oceans Apart Manchester and Pineapple Black Middlesborough). Media: hardwood, mirri card, collage from World of Interiors magazine (2019) The piece was made in response to a call to invited artists to respond to a postcard of Las Meninas by Velasquez, one of the most critiqued, analysed and transcribed paintings in art history. Bracey was challenging this quote (by Daniel Arrasse) in seeking a range of new artistic interpretations of this work. Artists were also asked to comment on what Las Meninas meant to them, and how they had interpreted the postcard and why. Following the three shows a book of the same title was produced, drawing on Bracey's own research and on the writings of all the artists involved, and containing a double page spread of images of this work and a comment extracted from the written response. The work is a kind of illusionistic peepshow using mirri card to create layers of reflection and a response to the composition of the original painting which suggests viewers outside the image looking in.

    Bibliographical note

Impact: The work was part of a regional touring exhibition that drew in more artists at each iteration from the locale of each show to add to the original invited core. The book authored by Bracey contains images of all the works and incorporates comments from the artists themselves and is arranged with sections defining key approaches that the artists have taken in response to the provocation and the postcard. The publication was reviewed in Studio International Magazine and represents an extension to the critique and analysis of this famous work by Velasquez through an approach of practice research and text.
