    Bibliographical note

Impact: A7 is a new work specifically created for the 2015 Lyon Biennale and installed within the b├ótiment de la Sucrière an old sugar warehouse in Lyon. For this work Mike Nelson makes the second instalment in a serial work the first of which was made from blown out tyres from the M6 in Birmingham, this time with a collection of damaged tyres found on the A7, the main road artery that runs through Lyon to Marseille, France. Placed on steel mesh structures with concrete cast tops, these tyres - ripped and torn by impact or from wear, are symbolic of a world in which waste is consuming its resources at frightening speed. Here, Mike Nelson continues his singular investigation of political histories through the raw materials of the planet, as if they were trophies of an ignored world, a powerful collection of ritual objects or anti-monuments dedicated to desolation - monuments which appear not to have been built over time but rather against it. Nelsons work allows an exploration of a singular history of Lyon, as well as a form of 'doubling' that's characteristic of the artist's oeuvre, through his raw materials' local and global political relevance.
