Abstract

The invention provides antimicrobial compositions comprising an effective concentration of a metal salt combined with a plant extract. In some embodiments the composition comprises a copper salt and/or an iron salt and/or a nickel salt and/or a cobalt salt; and an extract of a plant selected from a group consisting of Punica granatum, Viburnum plicatum, Camellia sinensis, and Acer spp. The invention extends to uses of such compositions as medicaments, and to methods of treating microbial infections. The invention extends to methods for preventing microbial infections by coating objects and surfaces with the compositions.
