Abstract

This practice-based PhD is centred on the production of the moving image artwork The Hide. 1 The Hide is a 30-minute single-channel (HD video) moving image artwork, developed with and contributing to knowledge within the context of contemporary art, specifically the sub-disciplinary area of moving-image. It also draws upon and is relevant to the of sub-disciplinary area of performance art, specifically performance that employs the practice discipline of dance. The moving image artwork The Hide features a number of subject matters including the landscape of Northern Portugal, histories of wolves in that region, the artist/researchers' activities with wolf conservationists, a choreography by a dancer, and a conversation with a Jungian psychoanalyst. The title of The Hide refers to the way in which the wolf (wolves) are rarely visible, as well as naming the ad-hoc architecture used to conceal an onlooker waiting to observe them.
