Abstract

This exhibition at three venues was the evolving outcome of kinetic-robotic research produced on winning the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award (2021). In collaboration with Llewelyn Fernandes, Dean produced a series of semi-autonomous, interactive robotic sculptures (‘crawlers’) which dragged themselves continuously around the gallery, avoiding obstacles and interacting with visitors and each other.

Point of view footage was live-streamed on low-set screens, viscerally giving the audience a close-to-the-ground creaturely perspective. The focus was on nervous/intensive movement (such as speed change and modulated sound) as the artist's aim was to induce pathos and alertness in the viewer; the mechanical behaviours of the moving sculptures suggested creaturely states, such as fear, curiosity and physical struggle towards a goal.

The exhibition at Standpoint was accompanied by an ‘in conversation’ event with sculptor Lyndsay Seers at the ICA (30 Oct 2021).
