Abstract
My drawings and prints use mass-produced net curtains to encounter tensions between cloying conformity and English working class aspiration. The time invested in the simple process of copying the net curtain pays homage to the material and ideological journey of the prosaic object.
For the ongoing series 'Ghost Flowers', a flower motif is extracted and 'copies' are made. Drawings in pencil trace the holes in the net, whilst prints on glass and paper fill the netted gaps with petroleum jelly to produce an inverse image of the flower. I conceive of each 'ghost flower' as a translation where cultural, material and personal significance coalesce.
