    Abstract

My MRes research uses my practice (photography and video) as a tool to 'read' Iranian history with reference to themes of desire and resistance in the life of Iranian women from 1979 to the present, with a specific focus on the 1979 Revolution as a pivotal moment in the country's history. I believe this is something interesting and meaningful for an artist to engage in; essentially, it amounts to, a 're-reading' of history in order to change the way we perceive a particular culture. In more general terms, my project addresses how contemporary artists can contribute to the 'reading' of history through practice-based research. In my previous work, I examined how women are/have been engaged in 'resistance' in relation to forces of tradition and/or modernity. Society (public) and self (private) have featured prominently, as have the veil and the metaphorical concept of 'veiling' in particular.
