Abstract

A short film of Griffin Award funded artwork by Ranti Bam, made during Bam's residency at the University of the Creative Arts, Ceramic Studio, summer 2025.

In this short film, Fletcher explores Bam's completed ceramic artwork, inviting the viewer to look closely, encouraging an act of slow looking, observing texture and form of the hand built vessel. The composition of the shots combines with movement of the piece and camera, along with dynamic sound design to experience Bam's piece in the research room of the Craft Study Centre, where she viewed Marx's textile prints which fed into her inspiration in making the hand built vessel during her residency at UCA Ceramics Studio and the Craft Study Centre in 2025.

This film tests out a methodology of composition, movement and sound design in inviting a closer way of looking at ceramic artworks through film. Avoiding the standard process or documentation film, Fletcher's approach maintains mystery of the final artwork, and revels in details of texture, materiality, ceramic techniques and artistry, conveying the corporality of the physical object through film.
