    Abstract

    This chapter identifies the connections between Christopher Nolan's Memento and Maya Deren's short film Meshes of the Afternoon, and discusses Memento's relation to experimental cinema as well as 1940s noir. It draws on Meshes of the Afternoon to propose a new reading of protagonist Leonard Shelby's identity crisis.
