Multiscale 2D shape representation

Abstract

This paper describes an efficient technique for representing 2D shapes based on sections of spiral arcs. The representation is invariant with respect to changes of position, orientation, and size. The shape may be considered at different scales of resolution. At coarser scales, minor detail in the contour is removed and the shape is simplified. Simplification can be achieved using rewrite rules which make the representation more compact, and hence suitable to use as a basis for matching and recognition.
