    Abstract

The increased presence of Muslims in the UK armed forces is a direct consequence of widening military recruitment to include citizens of Britain?s former colonies as well as the children of postcolonial migrants and settlers. Seen in this historical perspective, the significance of Muslim soldiers today indicates the symbolic importance of military work in the ongoing struggle for full citizenship and the right to belong in a diverse, multi-faith society.
