Abstract

Nowadays there seems to be an enormous and growing interest in the study and design of the modern interior, as shown by the number of academic and commercial events taking place each year and also by the number of institutions and publications that have made and keep making significant contributions to the field. Just to mention a few, there are the CSDI, MIRC, Centre for the Study of the Home, Interior Forum Scotland, Interior Worlds (Milan, Italy), World Interiors Amsterdam, IDEC Journal of Interior Design in USA (Interior Design Education Council), the Australian IDEA Journal (Interior Design/Interior Architecture Educators Association) and the journal Interiors: Design Architecture Culture. In September 2013 a global conference on interior design, 'World Interiors Meeting‘ took place in ├ümsterdam attracting hundreds of international delegates. One of its aims was 'to foster interior architecture and design as a valuable contribution to a sustainable, comfortable and a beautiful society for all.‘ 'Interiors reflect the identity of its users (lifestyle), are accommodating and social (care), are sustainable (re-use), responsible (health, safety), represent a considerable economic value (construction, furnishing, financing) and are a significant bearer of culture (heritage, multiculturality).‘ They are anxious to show that interior design is not a practice that responds solely to the cravings for style and luxury of the happy few. In this presentation I will refer to three related themes, the definition of what we understand by the modern interior as a field of study, mainly in the UK, Europe and North America, the work and contribution of the Modern Interiors Research Centre (MIRC) to the field, a centre based in our Faculty; and finally a brief overview of developments in the field of interior design since 1970, considering some potential implications in terms of historical research.
