    Abstract

"I cannot take it anymore; can I go to the PARADISE ROOM now?" These are the words of Greg, a care home resident living with dementia, unmistakably expressing his desire for a space where he can find comfort and peace. His care home was one of the organisations participating in our research assessing the use, design, and benefits of sensory rooms facilitated in UK care homes. The rapid growth of an ageing population and the rising number of people affected by dementia has brought on an urgent need for effective interventions in supporting dementia care to enhance the quality of life and well-being of people living with dementia and their carers. Considering the role and potential impact of design in this context, we have been exploring new approaches to designing environments that suit the needs and wants of people living with dementia in care home settings, culminating in the creation of a new live environment in a South London care home. This research, its outcome s, a nd the impact generated are the subjects of this chapter.
