Abstract
This thesis and accompanying poetry collection delve into the intricate interplay between metaphor, cultural identity, and the concept of home while examining the temporal dynamics of poetic expression. Chapter One interrogates how metaphors in poetry are pivotal in shaping and articulating notions of cultural identity and home. It posits that metaphoric language in poetry transcends mere ornamentation, acting as a conduit for exploring complex cultural identities and providing insights into how individuals navigate their sense of belonging amidst diverse cultural and geographical landscapes. The chapter further explores the transient nature of belonging, emphasizing how poetry captures and reflects its fluidity and examines the integral role of memory in the poetic construction of home and belonging. Through a critical analysis of poets, this chapter asserts that memory serves not only as a repository of past experiences but as a dynamic element that actively shapes and reframes the poetic narrative of home.
Chapter Two shifts focus to the dimension of timelessness in poetry, analyzing its capacity to disrupt traditional narrative structures and influence reader interpretation. The investigation examines how poets utilize linguistic and stylistic devices—such as imagery, rhythm, and enjambment—to evoke a sense of timelessness, thereby transforming the reading experience into one that transcends temporal constraints. This chapter contends that timelessness in poetry offers a reimagined framework through which readers can engage with the text, challenging conventional chronological perceptions and allowing for a multiplicity of interpretations. Together, these chapters underscore the transformative power of poetry, revealing its potential to illuminate cultural narratives while offering insights into the universal human quest for identity and belonging across time and space.
