Abstract
Book published in conjunction with a major exhibition in Sydney, Australia of work by American-born photographer Roger Ballen (b.1950). This is one of the first sustained texts to critically read Ballen's work from the perspective of its performative and psychological operations. Conceived as a series of 'theatres', by turns 'absurd', 'real and unreal', 'hidden', and 'forbidden', it moves through aspects of Ballen's practice revealing, as he puts it, 'a complexity of the inner mind.' Produced with full cooperation of the artist, 'Roger Ballen's Theatre of the Mind' mixes a critical and theoretical approach with extensive information provided by the artist.
