Abstract

This thesis investigates the use of satellite communications for efficient bridging of terrestrial network based applications. The various satellite communication network types and configurations are'discussed, along with terrestrial network protocols, focusing on TCP/IP, to show their individual properties and characteristics. Furthermore, the key satellite communication principles are discussed and a specialised IP based protocol (EtherNet/IP) with enhanced QoS and'performance properties are presented to try and bridge the requirements gap between the terrestrial networked applications and the satellite communications capabilities. By conducting a comparative simulation and analysis of various protocols to evaluate the performance of IP networks, and investigating the requirements for bridging and operation of heterogeneous networks, key aspects are highlighted that can be researched further to provide an enhanced version of satellite adapted transport architectures suitable for long range terrestrial network interconnection.
