Schoenberg's 'Pierrot Lunaire'

Jane Manning (Other)

Research output: Practice-based/Artistic researchPerformance/Live event

Abstract

Performed at Coombehurst Studio, Kingston University on 24 June 2005 as part of a national tour and recorded on DVD. Manning has given many performances of this work internationally with her own ensemble (including in Turin and Barcelona in 2006). She performs it from memory and without a conductor. Her extensive research into Sprechstimme and her study of the performing, compositional and aesthetic contexts of the work have informed this performance by enhancing her understanding of an authentic performance style for this work. This research is one of the key outcomes of Manning's AHRC-funded project and was given together with six world premieres by spnm-selected composers based on Albert Giraud texts from the same collection as Schoenberg's selection of 21 poems.
