Abstract

'Soundpainting‘ challenges traditional views dance-music relations in theatre performance. I aim to explicate how an active notion of space is embodied by dancers and musicians. This creative method acts out the 'struggle‘ between dance and music, using the 'problem of language‘ (Jordan, 2000) and fear of mickey-mousing (White, 2006) as a positive creative foundation, which utilises 'space [as] a practiced place‘ (Certeau, 1984). With reference to space (Lefebvre, 1991 and Certeau, 1984) and engagement with gesture (Larson, 2006 and Zbikowski, 2011), I ask: in what way is space as an active, conceptual, literal, physical and creative notion, utilised to foster dance-music works?
