Abstract

tank.tv is the first online curated exhibition space dedicated to artists' film and video. Between 2013-2016, in response to developments in technology and practice, tank.tv opened the tank.tv exhibition space, a physical gallery that operated in tandem with the online space in order to research and examine how the future of artists' film and video could intersect with emergent digital technologies, how curators can work with new generations of digital-oriented artist, while extending reach and engagement through residencies, exhibitions, artist work-in-progress events, new commissions, and education and interpretive events.

Impact: tank.tv exhibition programme 2013-2016 was an exhibition programme that addressed concepts associated with new artistic/digital production and expanded forms of exhibition, whereby the physical gallery and the online gallery could support and extend different readings of the same works.

The programme contained exhibitions of sculpture, video, print, installation, painting, architecture, work-in-progress events, mobile and computer apps, objects, poetry and performance. The programme was built upon physical and online exhibitions, on-site and online artist and curatorial residencies, new commissions, and interpretive events. Over fifty artists and six curators, from eleven countries, participated in the programme, and tank.tv commissioned one new, original artwork and two new online curatorial projects.

The programme was underpinned by the opening of the London's first public gallery dedicated to artists' moving image and new technologies. Operating in collaboration with the tank.tv online exhibition site, the aim of the programme was to examine artistic and curatorial practice involving digital and new media forms.

Success of the programme was measured in two ways: with the creation of new, original, artworks and exhibitions created on-site and online at tank.tv as part of the programme, and in audience figures, which exceeded 26,000 people (both on-site and online).

Supported by Grants for the Arts, Arts Council England, the tank.tv website/archive remains open and free-to-access, with the complete set of exhibitions available to view (2003-2016). The impact of this programme can be measured by examining the subsequent careers of the participating artists and curators, many of whom are now established exhibiting artists, with, including, solo and group museum exhibitions across the world.
