Abstract

This presentation describes a research project conducted with nine educators regarding the relationship between their disciplinary field and/or professional practice and the theory and theorising that characterises their work. The presentation briefly outlines the content and findings of the study, with a particular emphasis on its implications in practice; namely how do educators find time to think, develop and 'do' theory and theorising, and what contribution does this make towards enhancing learning and teaching in Spain/Europe.

Impact: The presentation unpacked for undergraduate students of education and their lecturers the significance of theoretical perspectives in education and how these help to extend our educational vocabulary towards new ways of thinking/speaking/ making practice. It illustrated the broad range of theories and theorists interwoven into the practices of the original research participants; it also linked to other presentations in the conference where equivalent ideological or philosophical standpoints were articulated.

This is an important step towards arguing the place of theory, especially its self-reflective, reflexive and critical pedagogy elements in the public domain, i.e. in contrast to the driver of 'evidence-based practice' which delimits the ways in which practitioners approach social economic and global issues through education.
