Abstract
On 25 of January 2002 Anglo AmericanPic announced its intention to withdrawfrom its mining operations on the Zam-bian copperbelt. In recent years, KCM(which is controlled by Anglo via itsmajority holding in Zambia Copper In-vestment Limited) has been responsiblefor around two-thirds of Zambia's cop-per production, half of its foreign ex-change earnings and currently directlyemploys 11,000 workers. The threat ofclosure, therefore, represents a potentialcrisis not just for the Zambian copperindustry, but for the Zambian economyas a whole. The aim of this article is toprovide a brief overview of the back-ground and emergence of this crisis, andto outline some of the future prospects forthe industry.
