Abstract
This chapter explores the foundations of monarchy, thinking about different types of monarchies, such as the difference between elected and hereditary monarchies and the difference between kings and emperors. The position of queens, as both consorts and female monarchs, is discussed. Spotlight Studies offer a variety of case studies including examinations of quasi-rulers like the dukes of Burgundy and the papal monarchy.
