Abstract

The conference presentation takes as a point of departure the influential misreading of Adorno’s criticism of ‘popular’ music, as reproducing the repetitive sound of oppression (the repetitive beat of factory machinery) and the standardization of music reproduced through its distribution and consumption in capitalist society. The intention is that the talk will embody, or act out, the force of revolution and transformation in D.I.S.C.O music, building to a crescendo in the first beats of 'club tropicano' - a (workers) paradise first heralded in the 1970s hit 'Car wash'.
