    Abstract

POWER IN THE LAND is an initiative (established in 2014) in North Wales that brings together a group of 10 artists to engage with issues of nuclear energy and the land. The work comes to fruition just as the last nuclear power station in Wales, Wylfa in Anglesey, shuts down at the end of 2015. The research project addresses both the local and the wider world, and the resulting artworks are created in video, sound, performance, sculpture, installation and in graphic and photographic forms. The works form a touring exhibition that will be seen in several venues across Wales before travelling to England and Europe. There is also a book publication, as well as a series of public engagement events. Researching, recording and working together, the artist's interactions with each other have stimulated the work as each artist attempts to come to grips with the conundrums of nuclear power. The impact made by the arrival of Wylfa in the 1960‘s on the language and culture of this corner of Wales falls within the scope of this show together with the legacy of a major power institution on the landscape of the future.
